Work Hours/Days: Seasonal Position, Practices and Meets Scheduled Monday–Saturday

Typical Calendar Days Per Year: Seasonal (Spring Sports Season and Off-Season Responsibilities as Assigned)

Position Overview

The Assistant Middle School Track & Field Coach supports the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a positive, structured, and inclusive track and field program aligned with the mission and values of Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy.

This role focuses on assisting with practices, supporting athlete development across multiple events, helping supervise meets, and contributing to a safe and encouraging environment where all student-athletes can grow and succeed.

Core Responsibilities

Program Support and Athlete Development

  • Assist the Head Coach in all aspects of the middle school track and field program
  • Support planning and execution of structured, developmentally appropriate practices
  • Help teach proper technique for running, jumping, and throwing events
  • Provide encouragement, feedback, and mentorship to student-athletes
  • Support conditioning, skill development, and injury prevention efforts
  • Help foster accountability, teamwork, discipline, and positive team culture

Meet and Competition Support

  • Assist with coaching and supervision during track meets and team events
  • Help manage athlete participation across various events and heat assignments
  • Support warm-ups, event preparation, and athlete transitions
  • Ensure student-athletes are safe, prepared, and supported during competition
  • Model professionalism and sportsmanship at all meets and events

Student-Athlete Support

  • Encourage academic success and positive behavior among athletes
  • Assist in monitoring attendance, eligibility, and conduct expectations
  • Build positive relationships with student-athletes while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Promote confidence, resilience, teamwork, and personal growth
  • Support athlete safety and well-being during practices, meets, and travel

Communication and Family Engagement

  • Maintain professional communication with athletes, families, coaching staff, and administration
  • Assist with sharing practice schedules, meet information, and program updates
  • Address concerns through appropriate coaching channels
  • Represent the school and athletic program positively within the community

Operations and Program Assistance

  • Assist with setup, organization, and care of track and field equipment
  • Help ensure safe use of facilities and proper event setup and breakdown
  • Support meet logistics, athlete supervision, and event coordination
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and athletic department events
  • Assist the Head Coach and Athletic Director with additional program needs as assigned

Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations

  • Criminal background check required for hire
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification required
  • Completion of required coaching certifications and trainings
  • Concussion training certification required

Other Work Factors

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to run, walk, demonstrate athletic movements, bend, crouch, and communicate. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Work includes regular outdoor activity in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed on outdoor track and field facilities, with occasional indoor meetings and travel for competitions.

Mental Functions

The employee is regularly required to communicate, instruct, coordinate, observe athletic performance, evaluate technique, problem solve, and work effectively in a team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Previous coaching or athletic participation experience in track and field, cross country, or related sport preferred
  • Ability to pass a background check (required)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Basic knowledge of track and field events, training principles, and athlete safety
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Commitment to sportsmanship, character development, and student-athlete success
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coaching staff, students, and families
  • Must meet league and school coaching requirements

Compensation and Benefits

This position includes a seasonal coaching stipend based on experience and program assignment. Additional professional development and coaching support opportunities may be available through the athletic department.
