Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical


Currently recruiting Registered Nurses - Medical Surgical Nurses to provide inpatient medical surgical nursing services on 5 West at Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego, California. Services will be provided Sunday through Saturday, including holidays, with coverage from 12: 00 a.M. To 11: 59 p.M. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hour periods, not including a 60 minute unpaid lunch break. This position supports patient care, charge nurse functions, clinical coordination, patient education, medication administration, wound care, documentation, and performance improvement in a military medical center environment.




DUTIES OF THE REGISTERED NURSE - MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSES:

  • Operate in a Charge Nurse role as required.
  • Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide range of healthcare professionals.
  • Facilitate optimal outcomes related to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with established Military Treatment Facility policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Perform physical exams and obtain health histories.
  • Provide health promotion, counseling, and patient education.
  • Administer medications, perform wound care, and provide other individualized nursing interventions.
  • Collaborate with and provide clinical guidance to members of the healthcare team in the coordination of patient care.
  • Make patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel.
  • Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Communicate and collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding plans, actions, teaching, and education.
  • Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate.
  • Perform nursing services identified in the task order.
  • Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.
  • Maintain infection control and safety procedures, including use of universal precautions.
  • Participate in peer review, performance improvement, risk management, training, and required meetings.
  • Perform timely, accurate, and concise documentation of patient care.
  • Operate and document in required automated systems, including MHS GENESIS, as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE REGISTERED NURSE - MEDICAL SURGICAL NURSES:
  • Associate Degree of Nursing required.
  • Graduate from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • Minimum of one year of experience within the last two years as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in any U.S. Jurisdiction.
  • Medical surgical, inpatient, charge nurse, military healthcare, federal healthcare, or DoD/DHA healthcare experience preferred.
  • Must be able to complete required credentialing before providing services.
  • Must be able to complete required health, immunization, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B screening requirements before providing services.
  • Must be able to complete required background/security processes, including fingerprinting and childcare background check requirements, for access to a Navy and Defense Health Agency medical facility.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
  • Must comply with all applicable facility policies, procedures, training, safety, infection control, documentation, and patient privacy requirements.
