Senior Back End Engineer

We believe that we can make big changes happen and improve the daily lives of millions of people by bringing quality software to the federal space. </p> <p>We're looking for a <strong>Senior Back End Engineer</strong> to join our VA team, building and maintaining the backend systems that power enterprise-scale notification and communication workflows for Veterans.</p> <p><strong>What you'll be doing:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Design and develop scalable backend services using <strong>Java</strong> and <strong>Spring Boot</strong> within a cloud-based environment</li> <li>Build and maintain <strong>REST APIs</strong> and microservices supporting high-volume notification and communication workflows</li> <li>Work within and improve a large <strong>Java EE</strong> legacy codebase as part of ongoing modernization efforts</li> <li>Improve system performance, reliability, and maintainability across distributed services</li> <li>Collaborate with frontend engineers working in <strong>React</strong> and <strong>NestJS</strong> to deliver cohesive, end-to-end solutions</li> <li>Support secure software delivery practices aligned with VA <strong>DevSecOps</strong> and federal compliance standards</li> <li>Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and Agile ceremonies</li> </ul> <p><strong>What you’ll bring:</strong></p> <ul> <li>5+ years of backend engineering experience with <strong>Java</strong> as a primary language</li> <li>Strong experience with <strong>Spring Boot</strong>, <strong>REST APIs</strong>, and microservice architecture</li> <li>Experience working with or modernizing <strong>Java EE</strong> legacy systems</li> <li>Familiarity with <strong>JavaScript</strong> and <strong>NestJS</strong> is a plus</li> <li>Experience working in <strong>AWS</strong> cloud environments</li> <li>Familiarity with <strong>Terraform</strong> or similar IaC tools is a plus</li> <li>Understanding of federal security and compliance requirements is a plus</li> <li>Thrives in a remote, collaborative <strong>Agile</strong> environment and genuinely enjoys working closely with a cross-functional team</li> <li>Communicates clearly and openly, whether writing technical documentation or collaborating across engineering teams</li> <li>Performs other related duties as assigned</li> </ul> <p><strong>Requirements:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
