Role Summary

Rivian is looking for  skilled and motivated Industrial HVAC Technicians to join our multi-skilled facilities maintenance team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex HVAC systems that support critical manufacturing and building environments. You’ll ensure environmental comfort, system reliability, and energy efficiency across the site — while partnering closely with Controls, Electrical, and Facilities Engineering teams to drive continuous improvement.


Responsibilities

HVAC Systems & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and repair rooftop units (RTUs), air handling units (AHUs), VAV boxes, chillers, cooling towers, and related systems
  • Troubleshoot BAS alarms, control issues, and system irregularities
  • Replace compressors, motors, pumps, bearings, and other system components with minimal instruction
  • Perform refrigeration circuit maintenance including soldering, brazing, charging, and wiring
  • Conduct root cause analysis on recurring HVAC performance issues and implement long-term corrective actions

Preventive Maintenance (PM)

  • Perform scheduled PMs on HVAC and ventilation equipment per the master PM calendar
  • Replace filters, belts, and bearings; inspect coils; clean drain lines and mechanical spaces
  • Maintain organized, clean, and compliant mechanical rooms following 5S and safety standards
  • Support seasonal system changeovers and readiness reporting

Building Automation & Controls

  • Navigate and interpret Building Automation Systems (BAS) to identify, trend, and resolve alarms
  • Adjust control parameters for system efficiency and comfort balance
  • Work with Controls and Electrical teams to interpret and modify wiring diagrams and sequences of operation

Hot Call Response & Facility Support

  • Respond quickly to facility comfort and mechanical hot calls, including loss of heating/cooling or airflow.
  • Escalate and coordinate with cross-functional teams for high-impact or multi-discipline issues. 
  • Communicate findings, corrective actions, and risk areas to leadership in real time

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete and close all work orders in SAP/Ranger with accurate notes and refrigerant tracking
  • Provide daily summaries of completed work and open issues
  • Support compliance with ASHRAE, OSHA, EPA, and Rivian safety standards

 


Qualifications

  • EPA Universal Certification (required)
  • Proven experience in industrial, commercial, or large-scale HVAC maintenance
  • Solid understanding of refrigeration cycles, compressors, condensers, evaporators, and control systems
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues independently
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical schematics, and BAS interfaces
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Perform break-fix & preventative maintenance. This includes but is not limited to observing devices in operation to location root cause of problem; dismantling devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; examining parts to detect imperfections; adjustment of functional parts of devices and control instruments; repair and/or replacement of defective parts; testing of device to observe performance; and performing tests for electrical circuitry and mechanical systems; reconditioning and repairing machine tools 
  • Identify and source parts, supplies and repair items as necessary 
  • Independently perform maintenance as per industry standards 
  • May be required to set up and operate multiple machining operations including but not limited to: lathe, drill press, grinder, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts
  • May perform welding tasks
  • Comply with 5S and housekeeping standards
  • Drive and participate in CI activities - processes, results, and cost savings
  • Update records and reviews CMMS history
  • Troubleshoot and analyze control systems to resolve software/ hardware and configuration problems
  • Utilize predictive maintenance technologies to collect equipment performance data
  • Provide assistance to other technicians as needed and leadership to small teams. Perform more advanced functions as a part of training and development
  • Complete on-the-job and technical self-study programs for career development
  • Follow all safety related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines. Situational awareness and identify unsafe behaviors and conditions

Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is $37-$43 an hour for Illinois based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus.
