The Sue and Eugene Mercy Jr. Assistant Curator of Drawings and Prints
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints, with a focus on Fluxus and its global networks, as well as contemporary corollaries in works on paper. Key duties include collection management, conducting research for exhibitions and publications, and supporting acquisitions. The Assistant Curator will engage with external contacts and other Museum departments on general curatorial inquiries and play an active role in exhibition and public program development. This role supports senior curators in various responsibilities, including administrative tasks within curatorial functions.
Responsibilities include:
- Collaborates on collection management, exhibitions and public programs with an emphasis on the Fluxus movement and its extended international networks.
- Researches the Museum’s collection and archives, supporting departmental projects, acquisition efforts, and responding to related inquiries.
- Plans and executes collection installations and exhibitions, individually or with curatorial peers.
- Assists senior curators with research, planning, and organization of major exhibitions.
- Authors, edits, and assists in producing Museum publications and exhibition-related materials, including wall texts and object labels.
- Supervises and instructs curatorial staff and interns as assigned.
- Participates in departmental teams focused on core functions (e.g., website, storage, acquisitions research, imaging, provenance) primarily as it relates to the Museum’s Fluxus collection.
- Stays informed about departmental areas of interest, particularly the Fluxus movement and its global networks and contemporary corollaries.
- Acts as a liaison with external contacts, other Museum departments, and contemporary artists, recommending actions to senior staff.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
- Requirements:A master’s degree or higher in art history and four or more years of curatorial experience within a museum environment or related setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in the Fluxus movement and its global networks, with knowledge of its impact on later generations of contemporary art and emerging artists.
- Deep understanding of global histories in drawings and prints. Familiarity with contemporary works on paper and their historical and cross-media connections.
- Proficiency in both collections management and exhibitions, including the ability to initiate, direct, research, catalog, and maintain works of art, and organize and communicate related information.
- Competence in exhibition organization, including installation, and the capacity to author supporting publications.
- Ability to recommend and solicit acquisitions and gifts for the collection.
- Proficiency in a second language preferred.
- Superior research and writing skills essential.
- Strong administrative abilities, initiative, and discernment.
- Proficiency with The Museum System (TMS) is preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and other standard office procedures and skills.
